How to Safely De Ice Your Windscreen

  • Friday, November 09, 2018

The blog this week is about tips to safely de ice your Volvo or Toyota windscreen now that the colder nights are upon us. It is worth noting that if you know that the temperature is likely to drop over night that you give yourself an extra ten minutes in the morning to prepare your Volvo or Toyota for your morning commute to work or the school run. Read below to find out our tips on defrosting your car safely and legally.

De-Ice your windscreen

Firstly turn on the engine and put your air conditioning on- this will circulate around the car and start to defrost the windows. Do not ever leave your Volvo or Toyota running whilst unattended – not even on the drive. You are basically serving up your vehicle to a potential thief, not to mention the fact that you are breaking the law. If you leave your vehicle running unattended on a public highway you face a fine of £30 as it will be deemed that you are not in control of your car. You will find that if your car were to be stolen after you had left it unattended with the keys in it your insurance company will be unlikely to pay out. You wouldn’t leave your front door open whilst you went out would you?

So now that you have your car running get your ice scraper or de icer out and work your way around the car – ensuring that you scrape all of your windows completely. Never ever use boiling water as a means of de icing – you run the high risk of cracking your windscreen-a costly and avoidable bill! Gently lift your wiper blades from the windscreen before attempting to use them to ensure that they are not frozen to the windscreen. If there has been snow fall ensure that you remove all of the snow from your Volvo or Toyota including the roof and the front grille. It can be incredibly dangerous for other road users behind you if you have piles of snow on your car, when it comes away from your car it will likely land on those behind you. Never attempt to remove the snow from your windscreen using your wipers – you could burn out the motor because of the weight of the snow.
