Here at ACC UK Ltd, we like to bring you handy hints and tips on how to maintain your Volvo or Toyota and how to save money on your annual car running costs. We also like to keep you informed of changes to laws relating to driving and car ownership.
One of the most common reasons that your Volvo or Toyota wont start is usually the battery. Do you know how old your car battery actually is? Especially during the winter months your car battery is put under a lot of strain. At 0 degrees F a car battery can lose about 60% of its strength at 32 degrees F it can lose about 35% of its strength. During cold weather it can take up to twice as much current to start your car!
A typical car battery can last anywhere between 2 and 5 years – so encountering a problem battery during your car ownership lifetime is actually pretty common.
So what are the indicators of a battery issue? Well if your ignition lights on your dashboard do not come on when you attempt to start the car is one sign, another is your central locking not working. A faint whining noise or no noise at all when you attempt to start the car is another indicator. The only way you will start the car is to either put a battery charger on your car or be jump started with the help of another. However remember that some modern cars are not designed to be jump started – please check your owners’ manual before attempting a jump start. We would then suggest that you take your car to your local independent garage and have a new battery fitted. Happy Motoring Folks!
