The blog this week is about the job of your Volvo or Toyota car battery. Not only do we like to give you hints and tips on good maintenance and looking after the health of your Volvo or Toyota, we also like to give you information regarding motoring in general.
Basically the job of the battery on your Volvo or Toyota is to provide the current needed to start the car. It is not there to keep your Volvo or Toyota running – that is the job of the alternator. The battery also absorbs any surges or drops in voltage, to protect your Volvo or Toyota electrical systems. The most common problems with your battery are usually with the clamp connections or a loss of voltage (flat battery). A flat battery usually happens if you are making lots of very short journeys – the battery does not have enough time to charge up – or there could be a problem within your Volvo or Toyota that is causing the battery to drain. An example could be a faulty boot light that is staying on unbeknown to you. This would require further investigation with your local independent garage. Keeping the clamp connections protected from corrosion using grease is a must. Batteries will need replacing at some point, if you are doing this yourself ensure that you dispose of the old one correctly or take your Volvo or Toyota to your local independent garage and they will dispose of it for you.
