We like to give you hints and tips on maintaining your Volvo or Toyota to help reduce breakdowns and expensive car repair bills.

The blog this week is about looking after the health of your Volvo or Toyota car engine by keeping an eye on the oil level and ensuring that you get your engine oil changed during your regular maintenance schedule. Looking after your engine in your Volvo or Toyota will ensure that your car will continue to give you many years of trouble free motoring.

Check your oil

Your Volvo or Toyota needs the oil, it is what keeps the engine running and keeps all moving parts lubricated. If you have no oil in your car it puts pressure on the moving parts and friction occurs and parts can break! Over time the engine oil can become dirty and contaminated, that’s just life, there is no way of preventing it. During your regular annual (or more frequent servicing if you drive lots of miles) servicing your local independent garage should change the engine oil. You can of course change the engine oil yourself, if you are doing this routine maintenance task then please ensure that you dispose of the oil in the correct manner and not just tip it down the drain! If you are changing the oil yourself check your owners’ handbook and ensure that you purchase the correct oil for your particular make and model of vehicle. If you use an independent garage to perform your engine oil changes and servicing then purchase some oil from them when you pay your bill, you can then keep this oil in your boot and top up your oil in between your annual servicing. We have written many blogs over the course of the years saying you should regularly check your engine oil levels, it’s too late when something goes boom! And will be pretty expensive to rectify if you are driving and run out of oil! So be sure to check at least every 1,000 miles – it takes minutes! Always check when the engine is cold and your Volvo or Toyota is not parked on a hill! Happy motoring folks!
