The blog this week is about how to ensure that you do not drive with defective tyres. Thousands of people every year are fined up to £2500 per defective tyre – don’t be one of them! Everyone is trying to save money at the moment, interest rates are rising, fuel bills are rising, food costs are soaring, insurance costs are rising etc so when it comes to owning a car, we need all the help we can get to keep costs down. Read on to find out more:

With winter fast approaching, we urge all drivers to use a 20p coin to check their tyre depth by simply inserting the coin into the main grooves of the tyre; if the outer band of the 20p is visible then the tyre may not have sufficient depth. If you are in any doubt as to the legality of your tyres please go and see your local independent garage for free advice. Do not wait for your MOT or service - act straight away! We have written many blogs over the years showing you how to use a 20p to check tyre depth. We are members of Foxy Lady Drivers Club and they send all their female members a tyre check safety gauge to check their tyre depth.

Other areas on your tyres for you to inspect include the condition of the tyre, paying particular attention to any cuts, lumps of bulges in the tyre, and ensuring the tyres are inflated to the correct pressure. We have said in so many blogs over the years that you should be checking the tyre pressures on your Volvo or Toyota fortnightly. Correctly inflated tyres will ensure that the wear is even, helping to ensure the longevity of the tyre. With so many potholes on our roads - it really can have a detrimental effect on the condition of your tyres, especially if your tyres are under inflated. The only part of a vehicle that is in direct contact with the road surface are the tyres therefore your tyres play a critical role in road safety. Acceleration, braking, steering and cornering all rely on the tyres' relatively small contact area with the road surface so their maintenance is essential. However, each year in the UK, more than 1200 road casualties are caused by an accident where illegal defective or under-inflated tyres are a contributory factor. We also do not advocate the use of part worn tyres – we think it can be dangerous. Don’t be tempted to save a few £’s at the cost of yours and other road users safety. If you need help in checking your tyres properly feel free to pop in and ask us to help. Happy Safe Motoring Folks!
