Here at ACC UK Ltd, we like to bring you handy hints and tips on how to maintain your Volvo or Toyota and how to save money on your annual car running costs. We also like to keep you informed of changes to laws relating to driving and car ownership.
The blog this week is about what you should do if you find yourself in the unfortunate position of breaking down on the motorway or on a dual carriageway. Read below to find out our tips for keeping safe:
Firstly, pull over onto the hard shoulder as quickly and a safely as you can. Once there put on your hazard lights and side lights. Point your wheels to the left if you can.
Secondly, if you are carrying a high visibility vest put it on and exit your Volvo or Toyota from the passenger seat. Do not attempt to get out of the car from the drivers’ side – it is dangerous. Don’t be tempted to rummage around in your boot looking for your warning triangle. Instead get yourself and your passengers away from the vehicle. Climb over any safety barriers – do not sit on them waiting for help. Move up the embankment and away from your vehicle.
If you are calling for assistance from one of the roadside SOS phones they will automatically know your location. If not then make sure that you know your location before calling for assistance. If you do not have breakdown assistance you may find that you have green flag as part of your banking current account. Please do not attempt to fix your car yourself, leave that to the experts at the roadside.
Once your car has been fixed and you are ready to recommence your journey, remember to build up your speed on the hard shoulder before rejoining the carriageway. Happy Motoring Folks!
