Here at ACC UK Ltd, we like to bring you handy hints and tips on how to maintain your Volvo or Toyota and how to save money on your annual car running costs. We also like to keep you informed of changes to laws relating to driving and car ownership.
The blog this week is about how the shock absorbers in your Volvo or Toyota work. Read on to find out more.
In basic terms, shock absorbers work by taking on the impact caused by the many bumps and uneven road surfaces in the road that we have, for example drains, tree roots and the ever increasing potholes. Therefore your shock absorbers take the kinetic energy of the suspension system and convert it into thermal energy which is then released into the atmosphere. One thing to note is that shock absorbers do not support the weight of your vehicle.
In essence, your Volvo or Toyota shock absorbers do two things:
Whether you are stationary or moving, the bottom surface of your tyres is the only part of your vehicle in contact with the road. Any time that a tyre's contact with the ground is broken or reduced, your ability to drive, steer and brake is severely compromised. Shock absorbers automatically adjust to road conditions because the faster the suspension moves, the more resistance they provide.
Our blog next week will talk in more detail as to how you can tell if you may need new shock absorbers. Happy Motoring Folks!
