The blog this week is about key hacking and what you need to know to prevent becoming a victim of car theft. Read below to see our top tips:

Modern vehicles today have keyless entry - maybe you or somebody you know drives a Volvo or Toyota, or any make for that matter with this feature. Whilst this new technology makes drivers lives easier, it has also unfortunately created an opportunity for thieves. We are sure you may know someone who has been unfortunate to have their vehicle stolen from their drives during the night!

What Is Key Hacking?

Key hacking/car hacking is gaining access to a car when the key is nearby, without having actually pressed the button on the fob. So how exactly is this possible?

When the key fob is close to the car, it emits short-range signals which tell the car to unlock. Car thieves have found ways to scan for these signals and hack them in order to break into cars. Therefore they can access these signals with their technology as the signals can pass through your windows and walls. They can then gain access to your vehicle start it and drive away.

What can you do to protect your vehicle?

  • Make sure your vehicle’s software has been updated regularly.
  • Use a steering wheel lock.
  • Use a key fob blocker – Faraday Bag.

A Faraday bag is lined with metal and can block these signals whilst your key fob is in your house – they are relatively inexpensive – around £5 and can be purchased online. Make sure that you have one for each key fob and always put your keys in there when you are home. Happy safe Motoring Folks!
