Here at ACC UK Ltd, we like to bring you handy hints and tips on how to maintain your Volvo or Toyota and how to save money on your annual car running costs. We also like to keep you informed of changes to laws relating to driving and car ownership.
The blog this week is about giving you some tips to help your Volvo or Toyota pass its MOT. According to the DVSA 40% of cars and 50% of vans do not pass their first MOT! Driving your car or van without a valid MOT invalidates your insurance and you risk a fine of up to £1000 plus points on your licence. Be aware of when your MOT is due and get it booked in at your local independent garage. Read below to find out our tips for helping your car pass its MOT first time:
This may sound silly but ensure that you have enough fuel and oil in your car – these are required for your garage to test your emissions etc.
When did you last test your tyres pressure and tyre depth? You should be checking these regularly. Turning up with tread that is below 1.6mm will result in an instant failure, along with cracked or bulging tyres. So check them before your MOT and get them changed before you take your Volvo or Toyota for its MOT.
When did you last check all of your seatbelts in your car? They all need to be working properly for your car to pass its MOT – they are an important safety feature.
Your windscreen wipers need to work properly – if they don’t get them changed before your MOT. Not all windscreen chips will result in an MOT failure. If it is no bigger than 10mm and in front of the driver should be ok. Anything bigger than that in the area that is swept by the windscreen wipers will be a fail. Anything bigger than 40mm anywhere on your windscreen will result in a failure of your MOT. You can usually get your chips repaired FOC under your insurance – it is best to action these as soon as they happen as chips can quickly turn into cracks which cannot be repaired and will need a windscreen replacement which will be costly.
Have a walk around of your Volvo or Toyota before your MOT and check that all of your lights are working correctly – if not replace any bulbs. Happy Motoring Folks!!
