Spark Plugs Explained

  • Friday, May 17, 2019

The blog this week is about the spark plugs in your Volvo or Toyota. Read on to find out more.

Spark plugs are part of the engine that need to be maintained and changed when necessary. Spark plugs are extremely important. The longevity of your spark plugs in your Volvo or Toyota could be anywhere between 30,000 – 1000,000 miles. Every time you start your car, your spark plugs deliver an electrical current to the combustion chamber in your engine and it’s this reaction that fires your Volvo or Toyota into life.

Spark plugs age over time understandably because the sharp edges wear down, and more voltage is required to bridge the gaps between the centre and ground electrodes. When they deteriorate this affects the efficiency of your ignition system.

Spark Plugs

Consistent trouble starting your Volvo or Toyota may not necessarily be a problem with your battery or starter motor. Your spark plugs might not be generating sufficient spark or they are draining the battery. Your engine misfiring, (engine halts for a moment and then continues on as if nothing happened), is one sign of trouble. Another sign that you could be experiencing spark plug issues is a lack of acceleration.

Changing your spark plugs is one way of ensuring good fuel efficiency and performance in your Volvo or Toyota. Driving with an engine that misfires may result in an increase in exhaust emissions as well as affecting your fuel efficiency. By fitting new spark plugs you will see a decrease in the number of cold starts that you may experience in the winter. Misfiring spark plugs can result in too much fuel entering your exhaust system. This can create higher temperatures in the catalytic converter, and may lead to a meltdown of converter parts, which in turn results in more costly repairs to your Volvo or Toyota. If you are experiencing engine misfires or are having starting issues with your car please seek the expertise of the mechanics at your local independent garage for further investigation.
