The blog this week is about troublesome car batteries. Most of us have been through it – jump into the car to go off to work and the car won’t start, or we can’t even get in the car because the key fob won’t work! It’s very annoying but occasionally it happens. The average battery will last for between 3-5 years but you may have to recharge it at some point. Read below to see some of the common reasons that you may experience a flat battery:
If you only use your Volvo or Toyota for frequent but short journeys, such as the school run, shopping, work is relatively local to your home your short journey will not allow the battery to fully recharge. Try and take it on a longer drive weekly to avoid this issue.
Do you charge your phone, use a sat nav or watch ipads etc that are plugged in but the engine is switched off? If so this could be draining your battery down. Even leaving an interior light on overnight when the vehicle is not in use could drain a battery – ensure all lights are off before walking away from your vehicle.
When the temperatures are on the hot and cold extreme they could drain your battery because it has to work harder to start the car initially.
If you are finding that you are having a problematic battery one thing to check is if you have had the correct battery fitted for the requirements of the car.
If you continue to experience problems take your Volvo or Toyota to your local independent garage for further inspection – it could be something simple such as the battery has naturally reached the end of its life and needs replacement or it could be that there is something that is draining the battery which you are unaware of and needs further investigation. We had a client that had his Mercedes in and out of the Merc Dealership with a flat battery issue – they could find no fault. Totally frustrated and many ££££’s down he brought it in to us for investigation and we found that his interior boot light was not going off and was subsequently draining the battery.
