Car Recovery….Do You Need It?

The blog this week is about how you can reduce the cost of car ownership. This week we are looking at whether you need to invest in a breakdown/car recovery service. Running a car has become a major expense, especially with the ever-increasing fuel prices. Everyone wants to save money on a monthly basis, maybe for that annual holiday or your children’s university fund or for home improvements. Maybe it is to counteract the constant increases in your weekly food shops or increased utility bills. Read on to find out more:

The expense of running a car is no joke and can take a huge chunk out of the monthly household budget. Roadside recovery is another expense but is it actually cost effective? Many people have some form of roadside recovery as a safety back-up but never actually use it. But how many of us have fallen foul to the scenario that we had it for years, never used it so didn’t renew it and then subsequently broke down? You could check with your local independent garage to see what they offer in terms of if you breakdown and are unable to drive it to their premises.

Drivers of broken-down vehicles which require towing/recovery to a garage can expect to pay anywhere between £150 to £300 for recovery, with higher charges for vehicles that are upside down or have crashed off the road. This obviously is a lot more than the cost of annual breakdown recovery. You also need to be aware of the type of recovery you have as it comes as different levels of service and cost. Roadside recovery may be included in your annual car insurance or may be a cheap add on when you shop around at insurance renewal time with your car insurance renewal. It is worth checking if this is an option available to you when you renew your annual car insurance. If you do actually think that this service is essential, maybe because you are driving an older vehicle, then make sure to shop around for the best prices.

Look out for special deals where basic roadside recovery prices can be had for as little as £10 per year. A lot of people have free roadside recovery attached to their current bank accounts - check to see if this is applicable to you! It’s worth sitting down and breaking down the costs of these things to see where savings can be had. You could be paying twice for these items and could actually save yourself a lot of money over the year! Every little helps! It goes without saying, that a properly maintained and serviced car is less likely to breakdown than one that is poorly maintained.
