The blog this week is about staying stress free whilst behind the wheel during the summer of stay-cations! With more and more of us having our holidays abroad cancelled because of the pandemic more of us are looking to enjoy what the UK has to offer. With record temperatures on the horizon, followed by rain here are our top tips for your journey. Read on to find out more:
1. Choose the right footwear & clothes
Make sure that you are wearing light and comfortable clothing. If you have a chance before you hit the roads book your car into your local independent garage for an air con service – it will be a life saver if you find yourselves stuck in a traditional seaside traffic jam! Contrary to popular belief it is not technically illegal to drive in “inappropriate” footwear such as flip flops or even barefoot but if you have an accident, your choice of shoes could lead to a careless driving charge. You need the full ability to control the pedals of your car so it could be more appropriate to drive in proper shoes and swap to your flip flops once you reach your destination.
2. Maintain your car regularly
We have seen so many bald tyres recently and broken coil springs – when was your Volvo or Toyota last in the garage? When did you last check your tyres – tread and pressures? When did you last check the fluid levels? Do not leave for your journey before checking all these things, you do not want to start your stay-cation broken down at the side of the motorway or facing a hefty repair bill!
3. Keep hydrated
Ensure that you have plenty of fluids in the car and plan regular comfort breaks if your journey is a long one. This baking hot weather is energy zapping especially if you suffer from hay fever. Maybe a good idea would be to share the driving if you can.
4. Plan your journey
As already mentioned we anticipate a lot more people taking stay-cations this year so the roads will be a lot busier en route to popular beaches and camp sites. Check road and weather conditions before starting your journey and ensure you have an alternative route planned should you need to divert. Ensure your mobile phone is charged so you can take advantage of the map facility if you do not have on board navigation.
5. Never drink & drive
It’s easy to get carried away and not realise quite how much you have drunk at the BBQ or picnic – especially as our gin measures are not the pub measures! If you are going to have a drink at the beach, picnic or BBQ make sure you have an alternative mode of transport home!
6. Prepare for slippery roads
As we are all too aware living in the UK – with hot weather and sun often comes torrential downpours – these can make our roads and motorways incredibly slippery – please adjust your driving to the conditions! Another reason to ensure your tyres are in tip top condition!
7. Never leave your pet in a hot car
If you cannot take your pet with you at your destination then leave it at home!!! The RSPCA states that in 22 degree weather the inside of the car can reach 47 degrees within an hour. This can be fatal to humans as well as dogs! You would not sit in a car in that heat so don’t leave your pet in there!
8. Don’t forget cyclists & pedestrians
The hot summer weather brings out cyclists and pedestrians, and if you are driving in the countryside you will see a lot more animals and farm vehicles too. Please be mindful of these other road users and keep your speeds down and concentration up! Happy safe motoring folks!
