When Should You Change Your Engine Oil?
The blog this week is about when you should be changing the oil in your Volvo or Toyota. The oil lubricates the moving parts in your engine, reducing friction and heat. If your oil is dirty or you are lacking sufficient oil then engine wear will start happening. Lack of oil will damage the engine and the repairs could become incredibly costly – and totally avoidable. Everyone is trying to save money at the moment, interest rates are rising, fuel bills are rising, food costs are soaring etc so when it comes to owning a car, we need all the help we can get to keep costs down. Read on to find out more:
Over time your oil will begin to degenerate as it becomes contaminated and gets old. To keep all the parts in your engine safe and in good condition you must change your oil regularly. Your Volvo or Toyota owner’s manual will outline when your services are due and when the oil changes are required. This will vary between cars and manufacturers - it may be every 6 months or it may be done on a mileage rate. It is worth considering how many miles that you actually drive – if you are doing a lot of miles every 6 months may not be sufficient. You can perform an engine oil change yourself on your Volvo or Toyota – just make sure that you dispose of the old oil in the correct manner – which is NOT pouring it down the drain!
Alternatively, you can book your Volvo or Toyota in solely for an oil change or perhaps an oil and filter change at your local independent garage – you do not have to have the full service every time (obviously you have the full service when they are due at the correct timely manner) but the oil changes can be done more often – it is relatively inexpensive and will give you peace of mind and many months more of happy motoring whilst at the same time ensuring optimal engine health! Call today if you would like some help or advice on changing your oil yourself or if you wish to book in for this mini service. We cannot stress the importance of regular servicing and oil changes – preventative maintenance is always a far better option to reactive repairs. And don’t forget, a well maintained car will command a far higher resale value than one that has been neglected. Happy Safe Motoring Folks!
