We like to give you hints and tips on maintaining your Volvo or Toyota to help reduce breakdowns and expensive car repair bills.
The blog this week is about the reasons to get your Air Con serviced. With the recent hot weather we are sure many people have jumped into their hot Volvo’s
or Toyota’s switched on the AC to find that it is either not working or very little cold air is being produced. Not good if you find yourselves stuck
in the many traffic jams on our roads today.
Your car air conditioning system works in two ways, it helps to keep you cool in the hot summer and demists your windows in the winter by drying the air.
It is important to use your air conditioning throughout the year to prevent fungus and acteria building up and causing bad smells. If you find that
your air conditioning is not working there could be a number of reasons. Firstly it may just need regassing, this is because it could lose up to 15%
of its coolant every year which will have an impact on its performance when you go to use it. This is not a system that is checked during your normal
annual car servicing, therefore it is wise to ask your local independent garage to check the system whilst your Volvo or Toyota is already in the garage
for routine car servicing. There is normally an additional charge for this, but it is something that does not normally need checking annually, every
two years should suffice.
If you find that your air conditioning is not working it could simply need a regass or there may be a leak in the system or a broken component. Your local
independent garage will be able to check your Volvo or Toyota and fix this for you. A poorly performing air conditioning system could cost you money
in additional fuel consumption as the pump is having to work harder, which in turn will put extra pressure on that component which in turn could demise
and cost you even more money. Preventative maintenance is always going to be cheaper than reactive maintenance. Please remember that an air conditioning
re charge is exactly that, an air conditioning service is more involved. So be wary of spending out money on a regass as there may be an issue with
a leak and that is money wasted. We have recently had a customer take his hybrid car to somewhere offering a cheap re charge and they put the incorrect
oil lubricant in which has resulted in damage. Happy safe motoring folks!
