Tip 2: How To Check Your Battery

Car batteries typically last for about 3 to 5 years. If it's time to get a new one, you can replace it in the autumn ready for the gruelling winter period. Winter months are very tough on your car engine and cause it to work harder, and this in turn puts more pressure on the vehicles' battery.



If your battery isn't that old, it's still good to make periodic checks to make sure nothing's wrong with it. Check the battery cables and clamps for signs of fraying or corrosion. If you see a white, powdery substance around the clamps, that's corrosion from battery acid—you can clean it off easily with baking soda, water, and a toothbrush. Your battery is also filled with fluid, so make sure it has enough inside. 

Most batteries have caps on top, and you can check the level by removing the caps. If it's low, fill the holes with distilled water, being careful not to fill past the bottom of the cap. If in any doubt take your car to your local independent garage and servicing centre where they can often do a courtesey car battery check for you. Dont forget that you must discard your old battery in the correct mannor! No putting it in the bin! Many recycling centres have special bins you can dispose your battery in!
