Brake Failure – Causes….

The blog this week is about the importance of checking your brakes so you can be aware of issues with them to avoid brake failure or be able to act quickly to get the issue fixed. Running a car has become a major expense, especially with the ever-increasing fuel prices. Everyone wants to save money on a monthly basis, maybe for that annual holiday or your children’s university fund or for home improvements. Maybe it is to counteract the constant increases in your weekly food shops or increased utility bills. Read on to find out more:

So, what could cause brake failure in your Volvo or Toyota? The brake fluid reservoir in your Volvo or Toyota is normally located under the bonnet and usually against the back of the engine or near the windscreen. It is important to check the fluid levels regularly. We have said this on countless occasions in our blogs over the years – check fluid levels regularly – it takes 5 minutes but can save you a lot of ££££’s if you are able to act quickly to a potential issue!

1)   Severe overheating can happen if the brakes are overused on a hill, for example, this can raise the boiling point of the brake fluid. Try to slow down using the gears and resist riding your brakes.

2)   If your brakes are grinding, squealing or feel spongy you should take your Volvo or Toyota to your local independent garage for further investigation. This issue needs to be investigated asap. Regular servicing by your garage should identify issues – i.e. low brake pads etc and they will advise you accordingly.

3)   The presence of water in your brake fluid is another reason for reduced braking performance. This can happen over time when pipes and hoses deteriorate. Checking fluid levels regularly will highlight this issue to you.

Your brakes are incredibly important, and you should look after them – if you were advised at your annual service or MOT that you only had a certain amount of miles left in your brakes did you make a note and take your car back to the garage to get them replaced in a timely fashion? Not doing this could lead to other more expensive repairs being needed or you risk not being able to stop your car when you need to. Happy Safe Motoring Folks!
