The blog over the coming weeks will be things you can do to reduce your car costs. Everyone wants to save money on a monthly basis, maybe for that annual holiday or your children’s uni fund or for home improvements.
Running a car has become a major expense, especially with the ever increasing fuel prices. Drivers can use certain methods to not only decrease fuel consumption but to also reduce other costs when running a car throughout the year. The expense of running a car is no joke and can take a huge chunk out of the monthly household budget. UK drivers are becoming increasingly frustrated at the rapidly rising car fuel costs. As petrol prices look set to increase the only option open to drivers will be to find more economical ways to run their cars. Please read our blog to find ways that you too can save costs throughout the year!
Roadside recovery is another expense but is it actually cost effective? Many people have some form of roadside recovery as a safety back-up but never actually use it. You could check with your local independent garage what they offer in terms of if you breakdown and are unable to drive it to their premises. Between 2015/16 and 2019/20 some 68,628 vehicles were recovered by statutory removal, according to figures released to Auto Express by Highways England under the Freedom of Information Act. The vast majority (61,498) were cars and vans weighing 3.5 tonnes or less. Drivers of these pay £150 to £300 for recovery, with higher charges for vehicles that are upside down or have crashed off the road. This obviously is a lot more than the cost of annual breakdown recovery. You also need to be aware of the type of recovery you have as it comes in different levels. Roadside recovery may be included in your annual car insurance or may be a cheap add on with your insurance renewal. It is worth checking if this is an option available to you when you shop around for your annual car insurance. If you do actually think that this service is essential then make sure to shop around for the best prices. Look out for special deals where basic roadside recovery prices can be had for as little as £10 per year. A lot of people have free roadside recovery attached to their current bank accounts - check to see if this is applicable to you! We have lots of customers that have cover with Green Flag included along with annual travel insurance and mobile phone insurance that comes with their monthly bank account fees. It’s worth sitting down and breaking down the costs of these things to see where savings can be had. You could be paying twice for these items and could actually save yourself a lot of money over the year! Every little helps! Happy Safe Motoring Folks!
