ACC UK Ltd, Winners of The Independent Garage of the Year 2015, Servicing, Repair & MOT Specialists based in the heart of Farnborough, Hampshire like to give you hints and tips on maintaining your Volvo or Toyota to help reduce breakdowns and expensive car repair bills.

The blog this week is based around taking your Volvo or Toyota to Spain this summer. Did you know that there are different rules and regulations with regards
to what you need to make sure that your Volvo or Toyota is compliant for driving in a foreign country? This week we will concentrate on Spain – a popular
destination for many Brits travelling abroad this year. We hope you find it useful and that you don’t fall foul to the local customs and laws.

Driving in Spain

Firstly you MUST be 18 years of age or older to drive a vehicle in Spain. You must also ensure that you have had headlight converters fitted to your Volvo
or Toyota. You can buy these in the UK before you go and fit them yourself. If you are unsure then take your Volvo or Toyota to your local independent garage where they will be able to help and advise you. You must also ensure that you are carrying a warning triangle in the boot of your Volvo or Toyota.
If you are using a Spanish registered vehicle then you must ensure that there are two triangles in the boot of the car. Like driving in France, you
must ensure that you have a reflective jacket within easy access – this must not be kept in the boot! Please stick to the speed limits – if you are
caught speeding you will be issued with an on the spot fine. If you need to wear glasses or are a contact lense wearer you will need to carry a spare
pair in the car with you. You also need to be aware that the drink driving limits are different to those in the UK. The limit in the UK is 80mg of
alcohol per 100ml of blood however in Spain the limit is 50mg. However if you are a new driver the limit is 10mg – therefore it is most advisable to
avoid alcohol altogether if you are driving as that glass of wine at a lunch break stop could well push you over the limit for driving!

Driving abroad is always nerve wracking, not only are you driving on the other side of the road, you are also unfamiliar with the roads and you are going
somewhere you have never been before. Make sure you have a sat nav with foreign downloads and a map should anything go wrong with your sat nav. Leave
plenty of time to make your journey and always stop regularly for breaks. Ensure that you have told your insurance company you are driving abroad and
also look into breakdown cover if it is not already included in your insurance. In preparation of taking your Volvo or Toyota abroad make sure you
get your car checked over at your local independent garage before making your journey. There would be no worse way to start your vacation by breaking
down and facing hefty bills. .
