Here is our sixth top eco driving tip:

Tip 6:Β

It is incredibly important to check your tyre pressures regularly. Why? Because under-inflated tyres are dangerous and can increase your fuel consumption
by up to 3%.

Tyre under-inflation is one of the most serious risk factors for crashes. An under-inflated tyre runs at higher temperatures than it is designed for. The
excess heat and friction can cause the tyre to disintegrate, leading to a blowout. On a motorway at speed this can be catastrophic.

An under-inflated tyre wears down much faster than one that is inflated correctly. This means that motorists may only get 50 to 60 per cent of the tyre
life they would expect from a correctly-inflated tyre, therefore tyre replacement happens much quicker and costs you the motorist a lot more money.
Also remember that an under-inflated tyre does not hold its designed shape as well under cornering or braking. This can cause poor roadholding and
extended braking distances, resulting in an increased risk of accident that could have been avoided if 5 minutes were spent checking tyre pressures.
