Fuel Efficiency

The blog this week is about fuel economy – getting the most out of a full tank of fuel for your Volvo or Toyota. Everyone is trying to save money at the moment, interest rates are rising, fuel bills are rising, food costs are soaring etc so when it comes to owning a car, we need all the help we can get to keep costs down. Read on to find out more:
Shop Around - buy the cheapest fuel in your area. Supermarkets often compete – when one drops their prices the others follow. You may also get vouchers when you do your weekly shop with money off your fuel (or loyalty bonus points)– take advantage – you could save several pounds when filling up your tank. This can really add up over the course of the year!
Tyres – ensure that you check your tyre pressures regularly. If your tyres are under-inflated you will use more fuel – not to mention starting to suffer from uneven tread wear – meaning you may well have to replace your tyres sooner than you anticipated. Check your Volvo or Toyota
handbook for your correct tyre pressures or ask your local independent garage.
Ditch the Junk – remove junk and clutter that does not need to be in your Volvo or Toyota – even the golf clubs in the boot! More weight in the car means the engine ha to work harder thus using more fuel. Remove roof
racks and roof boxes when not in use. Keep your windows closed when driving on motorways – less resistance through your car.
Regular Servicing – of your Volvo or Toyota will ensure that your engine is efficient by changing filters when they are at their life
end and ensuring that your oils and fluids are topped up correctly.
Using Air Con – this will increase fuel consumption so if you are driving on slower roads or around town open your windows instead.
Watch Your Speed – if you are doing mainly motorway driving – try reducing your speed from 80mph to 70mph and see how much longer your tank of fuel will take you before you need to fill up again. You may be alarmed to see that your fuel could last a further 25%!!! 80mph-60mph could save you 35%!!! A big saving over the course of the year would you not agree? Paying attention to the road ahead and less stamping on your brakes followed by a heavy foot on the accelerator pedal will also help to conserve fuel as the engine is not having to work as hard.
Change Gear Earlier – by doing this your engine becomes more efficient – using less fuel. We have written many blogs on driving style – making little changes to your driving style could not only help you conserve fuel but it could also increase the longevity of moving parts in your Volvo or Toyota resulting on less breakdowns or early parts changes which in turn results in significant savings! Happy Safe Motoring Folks!
