The blog this week is about giving tips to ensure safety whilst driving in heavy rain. Now we are entering the season where unexpected torrential downpours can happen at the drop of a hat you need to adjust your driving to the road conditions. Read below to see our top tips:

How To Drive In Heavy Rain?

During periods of heavy rain it is important that you ensure that your headlights are on so that you can be seen by other road users. Some people ask if its OK to use your fog lights during rain – yes it is but you must ensure that you switch them off once visibility is better – please do not drive around with them on all the time – it’s annoying and could land you in a spot of bother!

Be mindful of your stopping distances in the rain – you need at least twice the amount of time to stop so keep well back from the car in front of you. When was the last time you checked your tyre pressures, tyre tread depth and brakes? If in any doubt please pop into your local independent garage for assistance.

If your windscreen wipers are smearing or the rubber is perishing get the wiper blades changed – you can do this yourself or pop along to your local independent Volvo or Toyota garage where they can help. This is an inexpensive job but essential in this wet weather.

If you start aquaplaning – don’t panic and stomp on your breaks, instead ease off your accelerator and slow down naturally and gradually. If you are in the unfortunate position to find yourself broken down please do not prop the bonnet open whilst you wait for assistance. Why? well rain-soaked electrics can make it harder to start the engine when help arrives.
