Looking After Your Car Engine

The blog this week is about the importance of looking after your car engine throughout the year of your Volvo or Toyota, or any vehicle for that matter. Running a car has become a major expense, especially with the ever-increasing fuel prices. Everyone wants to save money on a monthly basis, maybe for that annual holiday or your children’s university fund or for home improvements. Maybe it is to counteract the constant increases in your weekly food shops or increased utility bills. Read on to find out more:

Hot summer weather can put extra stress on your engine, and boy we have been experiencing some incredibly hot days over the last few months. However, during long journeys or when you are stuck in traffic the stress in the hot weather can be magnified. We have written many blogs over the years about being summer ready with your car. Checking coolant levels, checking the engine oil, changing your filters regularly etc. These are very simple tasks that do not take long but will make all the difference in trying to avoid costly breakdowns. If your engine starts to overheat turn off the AC and if possible, switch to heat to help draw the heat away from the engine. Pull over as soon as it is safe to do so. Switch off your engine completely and allow it to cool down properly. Never ever remove the radiator cap whilst the engine is hot, as the pressurised coolant can cause serious burns.

You should also look after your engine during the cold winter months. One great tip you should absolutely be following is that instead of starting your engine and waiting until it has fully warmed up in the winter, it can be better to start it and drive off slowly (without putting too much pressure on the clutch or brake pedals) to warm the engine up. This is kinder to your engine and allows all the relevant fluids to move around. We cannot stress enough the importance of maintaining your servicing schedule- it is there for a reason- parts need to be changed when they have come to the end of their life – they do not last indefinitely.
