Looking After Your Wet Belt

The blog this week is all about the wet belt on your car. Running a car has become a major expense, especially with the ever-increasing fuel prices. Everyone wants to save money on a monthly basis, maybe for that annual holiday or your children’s university fund or for home improvements. Maybe it is to counteract the constant increases in your weekly food shops or increased utility bills. Read on to find out more:

Why Changing Your Wet Belt on Time Is Critical

A wet belt (also called a belt-in-oil timing belt) runs inside the engine and is lubricated by engine oil. The design was introduced to reduce friction, improve fuel economy, and lower emissions.

However, the problem is that over time the belt can degrade while submerged in oil. You may have seen previous blog posts or pictures on our Instagram and Facebook feeds of the degradation of the wet belts that we have been changing recently and the broken-up parts of the wet belt clogging up. If you neglect your servicing, use the incorrect oil, or the belt simply reaches the end of its life, the rubber can begin to break down. It is worth a note that manufacturers have been changing the servicing schedule and drastically reducing it because of the issues people have been experiencing – ie degradation occurring much quicker.

Problems Caused by a Failing Wet Belt

  • Belt material breaks up and contaminate the engine oil.
  • Rubber debris can block the oil pick-up pipe.
  • Oil pressure can drop dramatically.
  • Turbochargers may be damaged through oil starvation.
  • Timing can jump or fail completely.
  • Pistons and valves can collide, resulting in catastrophic engine damage and failure.
  • In severe cases, a complete engine replacement may be required.

Here at ACC UK Ltd we recommend replacing your wet belts earlier than the manufacturer's maximum interval, especially if you have an older vehicle or a vehicle with incomplete service history. We have seen way too many vehicles with damaged engines which are very expensive to repair, and some customers have had to scrap their vehicles because they simply cannot afford to fix the damage.

So What Are The Common Symptoms of Wet Belt Deterioration?

  • Low oil pressure warning light.
  • Engine management warning light.
  • Loss of power.
  • Unusual engine noises.
  • Rubber debris found in the oil filter.
  • Oil contamination discovered during servicing.

Regular oil changes and timely wet belt replacement are far cheaper than an engine rebuild or replacement. We have always advocated that preventative maintenance is always way cheaper than carrying out reactive repairs and wet belts are definitely one of the key items here! Please do not put off a wet belt change!
