Prevent Your Wiper Blades Damaging Your Windscreen

The blog this week is about how your wiper blades can damage the windscreen on your Volvo or Toyota. Everyone is trying to save money at the moment, interest rates are rising, fuel bills are rising, food costs are soaring etc so when it comes to owning a car, we need all the help we can get to keep costs down. Read on to find out more:
Have you ever touched the dirt that builds up on your car during the year? This is more prevalent during the winter because of the grit and sand that is distributed across the roads in periods of ice and frost. All that grit, dust and sand gets smeared across your windscreen and your bodywork, it’s enough to abrade the thin top layer of a laminated screen or damage the coating of a heat-reflective type of windscreen. During the warmer drier months wind can coat your car in pollen and fine dirt and sand that gets whipped up because the ground is very dry. Always make sure that your windscreen washer bottle is topped up with screen wash (screen wash is better than just plain water) but also wipe your blades before you use them. Especially if you haven’t used them for a while, because any grit on the blades can be dragged across the screen leaving fine scratches that over time become more and more apparent. If your wiper blades have degraded and the rubber has become perished change them asap. This is a job that you can do easily yourself – saving you money.
During the winter, don’t use your wiper blades on a frozen windscreen. The rubber from the blades can stick and tear, but even dragging over the ice left still frozen wears them faster. Thinner, old-fashioned metal framed blades are particularly vulnerable to this. We have seen plenty of cars over the years that lost their blades whilst in use and the metal prongs scratched windscreen. Don’t forget that certain issues with the windscreen could potentially result in an MOT failure. Happy Safe Motoring Folks!
