The blog this week is about part worn tyres versus brand new tyres. We often get asked by customers who need new tyres if we supply and fit part worn tyres as a way of them saving money. We categorically NEVER fit part worn tyres and do not advocate the use of them for a number of reasons. Read on to find out why:
They may seem like a cheap alternative, especially if money is tight, however in our professional opinion part worn tyres are a potential accident in the making. Look at a different way of saving money. The tyres on your Volvo or Toyota are extremely vital in keeping you and fellow motorists safe on the road. They are the only part of the car that is in contact with the road and so a lot relies on their condition.
Most of the part worn tyres available for sale in the UK have been imported, mainly coming from continental Europe, with countless ones arriving from Germany where their legal minimum tread depth is 3mm. The legal minimum depth of tread in the UK is 1.6mm. Obviously the cost of a part worn tyre is lower than the cost of a new tyre because it is second hand and has less tyre tread than that of a new tyre. A new tyre will have typically 8mm of tread a part worn one will have 4mm or less. Some part worn tyres may only have 2mm of tread. Yes you may be able to purchase part worn tyres for say £20-£25, whereas you may be able to purchase a brand new budget tyre for around £40. It is worth noting that budget tyres are probably more suited to town driving as you will be driving at lower speeds. So as you can see it really is a false economy to buy part worn tyres. There is obviously no price that you can put on the safety of yourself, your passengers and other road users – so please avoid putting part worn tyres on your Volvo or Toyota just to save money – you wont in the long run – trust us! Happy safe motoring folks!
