Top Tips to Avoid A Breakdown

The blog this week is based around some top tips to help you avoid a breakdown in your Volvo or Toyota. With the onset of the school holidays and a high number of people starting their staycations there will be a spike in congestion on our roads. There is such a thing as avoidable breakdowns – so what can you do to help you avoid them? Read on to find out more:
1: Keep your engine oil topped up
Engine oil is vital for keeping your car working properly. Engine oil is the lifeblood of your Volvo or Toyota and is vital – why? Well, it stops heat and friction building up within your engine and allows all the moving parts to work properly. Don’t wait util your oil light comes on – you should check it on a regular basis – fortnightly. You should also definitely check it before you start a long journey.
2: Don’t miss a service
Regular servicing can make the difference between your car running smoothly and fuel efficiency, and the risk of it breaking down and incurring an expensive and unexpected repair. We have said time and time again that preventative maintenance will always be cheaper than reactive repairs. By skipping regular car services you could end up with costly major repairs instead of normal wear and tear requiring minor maintenance. You also end up devaluing your Volvo or Toyota with an incomplete service history when it comes to re-sale.
3: Don’t ignore dashboard warning lights
Do not ever ignore a dashboard warning light! Sticking your head in the sand hoping it will go away will not work. These lights are there to alert you to a potential issue or an issue – take you Volvo or Toyota to your local independent garage for further investigation. Familiarise yourself with your owner’s manual so you know what these warning lights mean. It could be something simple like oil is required – you can do this yourself. Please do not start fiddling with things if you really do not know what you are doing – you could be making the issue worse.
4: Practice good driving habits
Our driving habits have a direct impact on the health of our vehicles and the parts which are essential for driving. Having a heavy brake foot will cause our pads and discs to wear down much quicker. Use your gears to slow down before using your brakes. Revving your engine when it is cold is totally unnecessary and can cause premature engine wear. We have written many blogs on how changing your driving habits will not only decrease fuel consumption (saving you money) but it will also help to preserve your car’s engine and component. Take a look at them to see how you can start to benefit.
