It's a common misconception that our cars don't need valid car insurance when they are not being driven. In fact, legally, cars must be insured unless
declared off road with a Statutory Off Road Notification (Sorn), unless they have been untaxed since 1998.

The Continuous Insurance Enforcement scheme came into effect in June 2011, and it states that all cars must be insured even if no one
is driving them.

The rules have been designed to help clamp down on uninsured drivers. If broken there is a fine followed by clamping of the vehicle, seizure or having
the car destroyed. Please note that warning letters are sent to you first.

Even if you let cover lapse during your vacation or whilst you are in the hospital for an extended period or you know you will not be using your car
for a while, due to a broken leg for example, you are breaking the law. You must apply for a Sorn during this period of inactivity declaring that your
car will not be driven.

Don't just automatically renew your car insurance to avoid a fine. Diarise six weeks before renewal and check for the best deal. It’s a competitive market,
shopping around could save you money!
