Why Is My Service Engine Light On?

The blog this week is about why your Service Engine warning light may ignite on your Volvo or Toyota dashboard. Please do not ignore these warning lights they are there for a reason. They illuminate when there could be a potential issue – please get your car to your local independent garage for further investigation if you are concerned once you have followed the advice below and nothing changes. Read on to find out more:

On today’s modern cars this light may say one of the following: "Service", "Service Engine" or "Maint Reqd". Basically, what it is doing when it comes on is reminding you that you are getting close to a Manufacturer recommended service schedule. On some cars it will come on based on the miles that you have done; on other makes and models it will come on because it is mapping things like engine and oil temperature, and it may be that you simply require an engine oil change. As the owner of the car you can override this service function, however it is worth pointing out that if you skip a service, then your manufacturer’s warranty on your vehicle will become invalid. When you take your Volvo or Toyota to your local independent garage for its routine service maintenance, they will reset your service light and stamp your service book.

Normally this light will come on when you start your engine – it usually stays on for around ten seconds and then will turn off – this normally indicates to you that you have about 500 miles before your next service is due – so get it booked in with your local Independent Volvo or Toyota service specialist. You no longer have to use a dealership to maintain your warranty, you just need to use genuine parts and maintain your service schedule. If it flashes on and off for about ten seconds, it normally indicates that you have exceeded the recommended manufacturers’ service schedule – you really must get it booked in right away. It really is a false economy to skip your regular service schedules – they are there for a reason – certain parts like oil and air filters have surpassed their optimum working shelf life. It is also worth noting that when it comes to selling on your Volvo or Toyota one that has had its full-service schedule will attract more interest and command a higher re-sale value than a Volvo or Toyota of similar age and specification that has not been well maintained and regularly serviced. We continue to stress that preventative maintenance is always going to be cheaper than reactive repairs. A properly maintained vehicle will give you years and years of service relatively trouble free! Happy Safe Motoring Folks!
