1) You must ensure that you use all of your mirrors regularly, as well as before making any manoeuvre or lane change. Don’t forget to check your blind spot too!
2) Always signal as early as possible to give other road users time to react – many will be happy to let you out if given enough warning. Remember that your indicators are there for the benefit of other road users and not yourself! They don’t know what your intentions are unless you show them.
•Change lanes one at a time. Don’t expect or force other drivers to move out of your way, all you will do is compromise their driving.
3) Don’t compromise your safe following distance when you are changing lanes. Always look out for other cars aiming to move into the same space as you from another lane. Remember other drivers may have the same intentions and thoughts as you. Always remember the two second rule, and adjust your distances if the weather is inclement.
4) Never pull out in front of other vehicles unnecessarily, less haste is always the better option. Always stay on the left hand side of faster moving traffic. Once you have made your manoeuvre don’t stay in that lane, always move back when it is safe to do so.
5) Pay attention to the overhead signs – they are there to give you useful information as to what is happening ahead such as debris in the road, building traffic or lane closures ahead.
Happy & safe driving folks!
