The blog this week is about the importance of maintaining your Volvo or Toyota, even if you are not using it as much as you were due to a change in circumstances. A recent survey carried out by Money.co.uk highlighted some alarming figures. Read on to find out more:
The survey carried out by Money.co.uk on some 2004 drivers aged between 18-65 found that almost half of them had delayed servicing their cars or performing essential maintenance. This was in part due to driving less miles over the course of the year and also due to the 6 month MOT extension. The same survey went on to highlight that just under a third of these drivers were driving fully aware that their car was presenting with a mechanical issue or a dashboard warning light.
Most alarmingly though it was tyres which were the most commonly ignored area, with 68 per cent of the survey participants readily admitting that they hadn’t checked their tyres since the beginning of the year! This is a very scary statistic and one we can certainly attest to by the state of some of the tyres on the cars that have come through the workshop once the MOT extension was lifted. More than a ¼ of the participants that did check their tyres admitted knowing that their tyres did need replacing but had not done this due to the cost of replacement new tyres.
We cannot stress how important it is to have any issues looked at immediately to prevent further costly damage to your Volvo or Toyota, but also because some of the issues you may be experiencing could be dangerous to you and other road users – especially driving around on bald or illegal tyres for instance. If your car is found to be unroadworthy at the scene of an accident you open yourself up to big can of worms not to mention that your insurance may be invalidated!
“With most regular drivers making smaller, more infrequent journeys, it’s easy to see why some might be tempted to put off repairs and maintenance, especially particularly expensive work. However, doing so could have serious consequences to the safety of your journey, and even invalidate your insurance.”
Some 40 per cent of the drivers surveyed blamed how little they were using their cars for not checking any mechanical issues, alongside tighter finances and delayed MOTs. We appreciate that average mileage has decreased this year due to the pandemic but that is no excuse for ignoring issues that present on your car-as a car owner you have a duty of care to maintain it and ensure that it is safe to drive. We cannot stress enough that preventative maintenance is always cheaper than reactive repairs! Happy Safe Motoring Folks!
