What Causes Carbon Build Up?

The blog this week is about the build up of carbon in your engine – what causes it, and how it can be avoided and rectified?  Read on to find out more:

The continuous build-up of carbon in your Volvo or Toyota is a natural result of combustion however, if it is left untreated, it could result in poor vehicle performance. So what exactly is the problem?

Well, the carbon build up restricts the airflow to the engine and causes obvious problems.

Symptoms of carbon build up to look out for:

  • Drivability issues, engine not running smoothly
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Engine vibration or shaking
  • Cold start misfires
  • Car jerking or surging when stopping
  • Engine Management light may be on

What are some of the causes of carbon build up?

Using poor quality fuel

Using poor quality fuel in your Volvo or Toyota can result in incomplete combustion. Some advocate that every 4th tank of fuel should be the higher octane fuel. You can also get fuel additives from your local independent garage and add them into your fuel. Speak to your local independent garage for further information. They are the experts.

Short journeys and constant stop-start travel

At peak times (which seem to last for several hours at both ends of the day) heavy traffic often causes stop-start travelling which can result in excessive carbon build-up. For those of you who drive a diesel Volvo or Toyota town driving can cause havoc on your diesel particulate filter (DPF)-short journeys and town driving does not allow you the opportunity to regenerate your DPF. We have written many blogs about this rather costly repair!

Lack of servicing

We cannot stress enough the importance of regular servicing for your Volvo or Toyota. Preventative maintenance is always more cost effective than reactive repairs. Vehicles that have not been serviced regularly will suffer from the effects of carbon build-up because they have not been seen by a qualified mechanic regularly. Using the correct oil and getting regular oil changes will go a long way to helping keep the carbon build up at bay. As your oil ages it becomes dirty with contamination-it needs replacing regularly.
