Breakdowns happen to others right? No! They happen to all of us, and it is usually when we have just got to be somewhere else, not stuck on the drive!
Here at ACC UK Ltd, multi award winning Independent Volvo and Toyota Service, Repair & MOT garage based in Farnborough, Hampshire, we like to bring
you handy hints and tips on how to maintain your Volvo or Toyota and how to save money on your annual car running costs. We also like to keep you informed
of changes to laws relating to driving and car ownership.
The blog this week is about the health of your car battery on your Volvo and Toyota. If your battery fails, you can’t start your car, unless you have a
set of jump leads and another car available or you have a battery charger. Some modern cars should not be started with a set of jump leads so please
do read your owners’ manual before attempting this.
One thing that you can do on a regular basis is ensure the water levels in your battery are topped up – if you do need to top up the levels then only use
distilled water – never ever use tap water. Be very careful not to over fill or this could lead to problems with the battery acid, if in any doubt
take your car along to your local independent Volvo or Toyota Garage.
One way to avoid a flat battery is to ensure that you have at least one journey a week that is relatively long to ensure that the battery receives enough
charge, those of you who only do short journeys are at greater risk of battery failure. One way of conserving the battery is to make sure that everything
is switched off before starting your car so that the energy in the battery is used for starting the car. So switch off the heater, stereo, heated seats
etc before starting your Volvo or Toyota. If your alternator is faulty this could also hamper the battery from charging properly during journeys. If
you notice that your windscreen wipers are moving much slower than normal or that the battery warning light on you dashboard is flickering then take
your car to your local independent Volvo or Toyota garage and seek professional advice.
