Car Battery Health
The blog this week is about taking care of the water levels in your Volvo or Toyota car battery. Most car batteries are sealed for life – apart from a
small vent hole which allows the gas to escape in a safe manner. These type of car batteries will never need topping up. Everyone is trying to save money at the moment, interest rates are rising, fuel bills are rising, food costs are soaring etc so when it comes to owning a car, we need all the help we can get to keep costs down. Read on to find out more:
Having low water levels in your car battery can cause you problems if left unchecked. Fortunately, checking water levels in the battery is simple. The
fluid levels should be checked once a month. Most people never check this – they don’t know how to or are not aware that it is a simple maintenance check that they should and can do themselves. Open up the bonnet on your Volvo or Toyota and remove the battery cap. There should be a vent cap, which can be removed, at the top of the battery. If water levels look as though they are running low,- below the top of the battery plates add distilled water (never use tap water as tap water contains minerals which could damage the battery) to the battery. The water level should reach the cell inspection hole.
Make sure that you do not overfill the battery, since this could cause problems with the battery acid. Ensure that you keep the area around the battery filter caps clean to prevent any dirt or debris from falling in and contaminating the water. If you are really unsure about what you are doing feel free to speak to a mechanic at your local garage who will be more than happy to explain to you what you need to do. If you are changing your car battery at home ensure that you dispose of the old battery in the correct manner – never throw it in the bin. Take it to your local independent Volvo or Toyota Garage such as ACC UK Ltd of Farnborough for correct environmental disposal or take it to your local tip and put it in the correct disposal area.
