It may seem like a simple procedure to those in the know but if you have never done it before then you need to read the blog to ensure that you are doing it correctly. Disconnecting and connecting your car battery in the correct order prevents dangerous short circuits, electrical sparks, and expensive damage to your car’s sensitive electronics. One very important thing to remember is that if you are going to be doing any maintenance at home on your Volvo or Toyota that involves the electrical system then you must first disconnect the battery. To disconnect your Volvo or Toyota battery you must first disconnect the negative side. This is very important!! If you disconnect the positive side first the negative side is still connected to the entire car and you could risk an electrical shock. The negative side will ensure that you cut off the return path for the current thus avoiding the risk of an electrical shock. It breaks the ground circuit. You do not want to cause violent sparks, melt your tools, ruin your battery or cause any kind of explosion that could ruin the electrics or cause an injury.
When it comes to reconnecting your Volvo or Toyota car battery you must connect the positive first and then the negative – so the reverse way of disconnecting it. Don’t worry about the spark when you put the negative connector on – this is totally normal and harmless.
