Here at ACC UK Ltd, multi award winning Independent Volvo and Toyota Service, Repair & MOT garage based in Farnborough, Hampshire, we like to bring you handy hints and tips on how to maintain your Volvo or Toyota and how to save money on your annual car running costs. We also like to keep you informed of changes to laws relating to driving and car ownership.
The blog this week is about whether your Volvo or Toyota is safe to drive. With the recent announcement by Grant Schapps MP about extending MOT’s for a further 6 months allowing car owners to drive their cars once the MOT has expired. Read below to see our top tips:
You as the car owner and driver are responsible for making sure your vehicle is always safe to drive (‘roadworthy’). It is worth noting that it can be unsafe even if you have a current MOT certificate. With the current situation with Covid-19 and the announcement last week that vehicles that required an MOT after March 30th 2020 would have an automatic extension for 6 months we thought that we would put some tips together for you to check at home. We are not in favour on the 6 month extension as we see the absolute horrors being brought in for an MOT, the sheer downright and dangerous condition of some of the cars on our roads is shocking to say the least like missing pedal parts, bald and split tyres and broken seatbelts tied together. So please exercise caution. You drive a lethal machine. We are still open at present and able to carry out servicing, repairs and MOT’s with a reduced workforce and whilst we are still able to access parts.
PLEASE NOTE: You can be fined up to £2,500, be banned from driving and get 3 penalty points for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition.
So what can you check yourself?
- the windscreen, windows and mirrors are clean, no cracks etc
- all your vehicle lights work correctly – replace bulbs if required
- the brakes work properly
Your Volvo or Toyota handbook will tell you how often to check the following:
- engine oil
- water level in the radiator
- brake fluid level
- windscreen and rear window washer bottles - top up with windscreen washer fluid if necessary
- tyres - they must have the correct tread depth (check with a 20p – 1.6mm) and be inflated correctly and free from cracks and splits – you need to be mindful of the inner walls of your tyres also not just the outside.
A third of cars fail their MOT’s for a number of reasons every year, so these cars will potentially be on our roads now today and for the next 6 months – it really is quite a horrifying thought that some of these should NOT be on the road. If you are able to we urge you to take your vehicle for testing or arrange with your local independent garage to pick up your car for its MOT. All MOT’s, Servicing and repairs can be carried out with no contact with the customer to adhere to social distancing rules and guidelines. We as a garage have been conducting ourselves very successfully in this manner for weeks and will continue to serve you for as long as we are able to get the parts we need for your work. Stay Safe folks! Happy Safe Motoring!
