Servicing Your Air Conditioning

The blog this week is about why it’s good to service your AC regularly on your Volvo or Toyota. Running a car has become a major expense, especially with the ever-increasing fuel prices. Everyone wants to save money on a monthly basis, maybe for that annual holiday or your children’s university fund or for home improvements. Maybe it is to counteract the constant increases in your weekly food shops or increased utility bills. Read on to find out more:
Regular servicing of your car's air-conditioning system isn't just about keeping the cabin cold in summer. The AC system is a complex combination of refrigerant, seals, compressors, condensers, filters, sensors, and electronics that can become less efficient or develop faults over time.
Why choose a good independent garage such as ACC UK Ltd?
A reputable independent garage such as us here at ACC UK Ltd can often provide excellent AC servicing while offering more personalised service and better value than some main dealers. This is because we do not have the high over heads so our hourly rate is often way more attractive. We have Master Technicians here who are highly qualified and so you will get exactly the same level of service and expertise but at a far more affordable price.
Warning signs that your AC needs attention
- Air isn't as cold as before.
- Cooling takes a long time.
- Unpleasant smells from the vents.
- Windows mist up more than usual.
- Clicking, squealing, or grinding noises when the AC is running.
- Water leaks inside the cabin.
- AC cycles on and off excessively.
Treating these symptoms early can often save a significant repair bill later.
In short, regular AC servicing helps maintain comfort, efficiency, air quality, and reliability while reducing the likelihood of expensive repairs. A reputable independent garage like us here at ACC UK Ltd with the proper AC expertise and knowledge can provide the best balance of technical knowledge, service quality, and value for money.
Why regular AC servicing matters
- Maintains cooling performance
Even a healthy AC system can lose a small amount of refrigerant each year through microscopic seepage. As refrigerant levels drop, cooling performance declines and the compressor has to work harder.
- Prevents expensive repairs
The compressor is often the most expensive component in the system. Low refrigerant levels can reduce lubrication within the system, increasing wear and potentially leading to compressor failure.
- Improves fuel efficiency (or EV range)
An AC system that is struggling due to low refrigerant, blocked condensers, or dirty filters requires more energy to operate. In petrol and diesel vehicles this can slightly increase fuel consumption; in electric vehicles it can reduce the driving range.
- Reduces unpleasant smells and bacteria
Moisture accumulates in the evaporator, creating an environment where mould, mildew, and bacteria can grow. Regular servicing and sanitisation help eliminate musty odours and improve cabin air quality. If you can smell a bad odour then it’s a sign that you need to get your car into the garage.
- Helps demist windows
Many drivers forget that air conditioning is used throughout the year to remove moisture from the air. A properly functioning AC system helps clear fogged-up windows quickly during colder months. So, ensure that you use the AC regularly throughout the year.
- Protects system components
Regular inspections can identify:
- Refrigerant leaks
- Worn hoses and seals
- Damaged condensers
- Failing compressors
- Electrical faults
Catching these early is usually much cheaper than waiting for a complete failure. We always say that preventative maintenance is always going to be cheaper than reactive repairs.
Our Top Tips to keep your car AC working efficiently
1) Run it regularly
Use the AC for at least 10–15 minutes every couple of weeks, even in winter. This circulates oil through the system and helps keep seals lubricated. As the saying goes – the AC is not just for the summer – it’s supposed to be used all year round.
2) Use the recirculation setting
Once the cabin is cool, switch to recirculation mode. The system cools already-conditioned air instead of constantly cooling warm outside air. Making the system work a little less harder and making you more fuel efficient.
3) Keep the cabin filter clean
A clogged pollen or cabin filter restricts airflow and makes the system work harder. Regular servicing should ensure that these are replaced in a timely manner. When was your last service?
4) Keep the condenser clean
The condenser sits at the front of the vehicle and can become blocked by dirt, leaves, and insects. Keeping it clean improves cooling efficiency. Check for debris when you are checking your fluid levels and remove any you find.
5) Don't ignore weak cooling
If the air isn't as cold as it used to be, or you hear unusual noises, have it checked promptly. Small refrigerant leaks often become larger and more costly if left unattended. Don’t do what a lot of people do and just get a re gas – if there is a leak in the system then you are just throwing your money away. Don’t be attracted to a sign with a special offer of a cheap re gas! They will be popping up everywhere as it starts to get warmer.
6) Park in the shade when possible
Reducing cabin temperature before starting your journey means the AC has less work to do. So, during the hot summer months try and park your Volvo or Toyota in the shade. If you have parked in the sun let the hot air out through your windows and doors first before you turn the AC on.
