The blog this week is about the Volvo E-RAD. What it is, common problems and why choosing an independent Volvo specialist garage such as ACC UK Ltd makes sense. Running a car has become a major expense, especially with the ever-increasing fuel prices. Everyone wants to save money on a monthly basis, maybe for that annual holiday or your children’s university fund or for home improvements. Maybe it is to counteract the constant increases in your weekly food shops or increased utility bills. Read on to find out more:

If you own a modern Volvo plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle, you may have heard the term E-RAD. Whilst it sounds technical, understanding what it is and recognising the signs of a problem can help you avoid costly repairs and unnecessary stress. Ignoring the signs can often lead to the possibility of going into limp mode and a more costly repair – things we want you to avoid.

In this blog, we explain what the E-RAD is, how it works, the most common faults, what happens when it fails, and why choosing an experienced independent Volvo Specialist such as ACC UK Ltd can often be a better option than using a main dealership.

What Does E-RAD Stand For?

E-RAD stands for Electric Rear Axle Drive.

It is an electric drive unit fitted to the rear axle of many Volvo Recharge plug-in hybrid models. Unlike traditional all-wheel-drive systems that use a prop shaft connecting the front and rear axles, Volvo's E-RAD system uses an electric motor to power the rear wheels independently. The petrol engine drives the front wheels, while the electric motor drives the rear wheels.

Whilst this system is an impressive piece of engineering, like any advanced component, it can develop faults over time. We have seen our fair share of customers present with E-RAD issues in the workshop. Here at ACC UK Ltd we have fully qualified and experienced Volvo Master Technicians who can diagnose the faults and fix them but for a more cost-effective price. Later in the blog we will talk about common faults that can present with the E-RAD.

The Following Volvo Models Have an E-RAD

The E-RAD system is found in many Volvo Recharge plug-in hybrid models, including:

  • XC60 Hybrid
  • XC90 Hybrid
  • S60 Hybrid
  • S90 Hybrid
  • V60 Hybrid
  • V90 Hybrid

Depending on the model and year, the design and power output may vary, but the overall principle of the E-RAD remains the same.

What Are The Common E-RAD Problems?

Bearing Wear

One of the most common issues is worn bearings within the drive unit.

Symptoms may include:

  • Whining noise from the rear of the vehicle
  • Humming that increases with speed
  • Vibration under acceleration

If you have any of these issues the best thing to do is not stick your head in the sand ignoring it hoping the issue goes away – it wont, and If left, bearing wear can eventually damage the internal gears. This will result in a much more costly repair. Bring your Volvo in for investigation to us here at ACC UK Ltd, Volvo Specialists.

Internal Gear Damage

If you have not had the above issues investigated and the bearings deteriorate then excessive movement inside the unit can lead to gear wear or failure. At this point you may notice the following:

  • Grinding noises
  • Knocking sounds
  • Loss of smooth operation

If you notice any of the above issues, then please bring your Volvo in for investigation so we can determine what the fault is.

Electric Motor Faults

The electric motor itself can develop internal electrical faults, reducing the performance of your Volvo or cause the complete loss of rear-wheel drive.

Oil Contamination

If internal components begin wearing prematurely, metal particles can contaminate the gearbox oil, accelerating further damage. Oil lubricates lots of components and systems and contaminated oil can have a very costly affect on many other parts of the engine. This is because of the friction of metal particles on moving components.

Water Ingress

Although uncommon, damaged seals or external damage may allow moisture into the unit, affecting bearings and electrical components on your Volvo.

What Happens If an E-RAD Fails?

An E-RAD failure in your Volvo may not necessarily leave you broken down immediately, but it can significantly affect how your Volvo performs. If you notice any changes or issues already mentioned please do not ignore the signs. Book your Volvo in for investigation here at ACC UK Ltd.

Depending on the severity of the fault, you may experience one or more of the following:

  • Warning messages on the dashboard
  • Reduced power
  • Loss of all-wheel drive
  • Electric drive becoming unavailable
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Gone into Limp-home mode
  • Unusual clunking or loud noises from the rear axle

In many cases, your Volvo will continue operating using the front petrol engine alone, but this should never be considered a permanent solution.

Continuing to drive with a failing E-RAD can lead to more extensive—and more expensive—damage. We have always said preventative maintenance is always going to be cheaper than reactive repairs. The same can be said for issues with your E-RAD. If you get to the issue straight away before it becomes damage like a domino effect, then the damage can be contained and the repair can be way cheaper.

Can an E-RAD Be Repaired?

Yes—in many cases.

Whilst the dealerships often recommend replacing the complete E-RAD assembly, independent Volvo specialists such as ACC UK Ltd may be able to diagnose the fault more precisely and determine whether repair is a viable option. We have Volvo Trained Master Technicians here at ACC UK Ltd and we work very differently. We will investigate each part of the E-RAD to determine if it can be repaired as opposed to replacing the whole unit. Our customers will attest to that.

Depending on the issue, repairs may include:

  • Bearing replacement
  • Seal replacement
  • Internal component repairs
  • Oil servicing
  • Electronic diagnosis and calibration

A proper diagnosis is always the first step before committing to a full replacement. So, if you have already been to a dealership, you have nothing to lose in bringing your Volvo to us here at ACC UK Ltd for a second opinion and a second quote for comparison.

Don't Ignore the Warning Signs

You know your car - If your Volvo develops unusual noises from the rear, displays hybrid system warnings, or loses all-wheel-drive functionality, it's imperative that you have your Volvo inspected as soon as possible. Early diagnosis can often prevent minor issues from developing into major failures as we have already stated which in turn will be much cheaper to fix. The warning lights are there for a reason – to warn you of an issue. These lights don’t normally come on for no reason. So, bring your car in for inspection – we can plug it in and pull up the fault codes and then take it from there. You are not obligated to use a main dealer – you can take your car wherever you chose.
