The blog this week is about the importance of looking after the tyres on your Volvo or Toyota, or any vehicle for that matter. Running a car has become a major expense, especially with the ever-increasing fuel prices. Everyone wants to save money on a monthly basis, maybe for that annual holiday or your children’s university fund or for home improvements. Maybe it is to counteract the constant increases in your weekly food shops or increased utility bills. Read on to find out more:
Saving Your Tyres From Premature Wear
Maintaining the correct tyre pressure is essential for safe braking and handling of your vehicle. The recommended tyre pressure for your particular car can usually be found in your owner's manual. Driving on tyres that are not correctly inflated can be dangerous - especially due to the ever-increasing potholes on our roads. We have had our fair share of customers into the workshop with damaged vehicles after hitting potholes. If there is flood water present in a pothole that you simply do not see, under inflated tyres will puncture more easily - costing you money you need not spend if you had spent a few minutes every month checking your tyre pressures. Keeping a check on tyre pressure once a month can prevent this. We have spoken many times over the years on our blogs about tyre checks. Don’t neglect them. On the flip side, driving with tyres that are over inflated can also cause braking and handling problems. In both cases, the car will not be using the full width of the tyre tread. Having the tracking checked too will help you ensure even wear across your tyres - again an important item to keep an eye on with the number of potholes we experience on a day to day basis! If you are having any tyres changed and your garage recommends you have the tracking checked too you should just go ahead. Uneven wear on a tyre is so common and means that you are having to replace your tyres more prematurely costing you more money than necessary. Yes, it costs money to have your tracking checked and corrected but no where near as much as it costs to actually replace tyres that have uneven wear. We say it time and time again proactive maintenance is always going to be cheaper than carrying out reactive repairs. If you have an accident and have defective tyres you run the risk of having your insurance company refusing to pay out on a claim. You also risk a fine of up to £2500 per tyre along with 3 penalty points per tyre if caught with defective tyres. Do the maths – look after your tyres! Happy Safe Motoring Folks!
