Looking After Your Clutch
The blog this week is about looking after your clutch in your Volvo or Toyota. Everyone is trying to save money at the moment, interest rates are rising, fuel bills are rising, food costs are soaring etc so when it comes to owning a car, we need all the help we can get to keep costs down. Read on to find out more:
The blog this week is about the health of your clutch on your Volvo or Toyota. How often do you check the fluid levels on your clutch? We have written many blogs about basic tasks that you can do on a regular basis to maintain the health and longevity of your car. One of the things that should be regularly checked is your fluid levels – not just your washer bottle, oil and antifreeze/coolant. Do you leave it to your local independent garage when you book in for your annual service?
We advise that you check your levels monthly, that way if you find that you are having to regularly top up then there could be a problem – possibly a leak. It means that you can action a potential problem before it becomes an expensive issue hopefully. If you are unsure which bottle is your brake/clutch fluid then check your owners’ manual. If you find that your fluid looks dirty upon inspection, then this could be a sign that the seals in the master cylinder are compromised. They are not built to last forever and at some point will perish.
Either of these issues need to be investigated by an expert at your local independent Volvo or Toyota garage. Another sign of course is a spongy clutch pedal or difficulty engaging gear. If you are having to force a gear change or you are crunching through the gears, then this would indicate a problem – one not to ignore! It really won’t go away if you ignore it. If you have a failure in the system your Volvo or Toyota will be rendered un drivable.
Never ignore any of these issues as they will not disappear, they will only get worse. If you break down without cover such as The RAC, AA or Green Flag then you could end up with a costly towing service to the garage on top of the repair – something that you could totally avoid if you took action as soon as you knew of a problem.
We cannot reiterate enough how important it is to have regular servicing and to carry out fluid checks regularly in-between. The same as checking your tyre pressures. Looking after your car properly will reward you with longevity when it comes to owning the car. It will also help with the resale value when it comes to selling your car in the future.
