Radiator Health

The blog this week is about carrying out regular checks on your Volvo or Toyota car radiator. This is a vital part of your car, and should the radiator fail you risk costly damage to your engine. Everyone is trying to save money at the moment, interest rates are rising, fuel bills are rising, food costs are soaring etc so when it comes to owning a car, we need all the help we can get to keep costs down. Read on to find out more:
The coolant that you use in your radiator is usually a mix of antifreeze and water – the antifreeze is there to make sure that your Volvo or Toyota starts in cold weather – making sure that the water has not frozen! You need to check the levels monthly to make sure that you are not experiencing any leaks. Early detection of potential leaks can save you a lot of heartache and protect your wallet! If it needs topping up when you check it, then make a note of how often you are having to do this. Keep a bottle of coolant in your boot for emergencies. We sell these in reception if you need to keep some handy. Please be advised – never ever check your coolant levels when your engine is hot. You risk injuring yourself by escaping steam – and oh boy does that hurt!!! It’s best to check the levels when you are checking your oil etc – when the engine is cold. It only takes 10 minutes a month to check your fluid levels and tyre pressures – it really can help you save hundreds if not thousands on totally avoidable repair costs. We had a Volvo in a few weeks ago which was less than 3 years old. The owner had this car from new and had only had 1 service. They drove the vehicle despite the oil light being on. Guess what? It cost them £15,000 for a new engine and the labour charge! Crazy!
If you notice that the temperature gauge on your Volvo or Toyota is increasing or running hotter than normal then it is advisable to get your car booked in to your local independent garage for inspection – it could be a sign that your water pump is damaged or that it has just come to the end of its life – the water pump does what it says – pumps water/coolant around the engine – if this fails then it could be costly in terms of the resulting damage. Know your car folks and act quickly! Don’t ignore the signs! Driving around with a potential issue could be a very costly mistake. These issues do not go away on their own – they just get worse. Happy Safe Motoring Folks!
