The blog this week is about the cooling fan on your Volvo or Toyota. This hot weather we are experiencing at the moment means your cooling fan will be tested to its limits. Also with the current climate here in the UK with restrictions on travel abroad and those simply not wanting to get on a plane there will no doubt be a lot more stay-cations and trips to the beach. So with that in mind the blog this week will address your cars cooling fan in your Volvo or Toyota.  Read below to see our top tips:

Your cars cooling fan is activated automatically when the engine begins to overheat, it does this by drawing air in through the radiator in order to cool the engine. However, if the fan seizes then the engine coolant will most likely begin to boil which could cause significant and incredibly costly damage to your vehicles engine! It is not an uncommon problem and we have seen plenty of these in the garage over the years.

The only way you can check the health of your vehicles cooling fan is to turn your heater to the cold position and run the engine to normal temperatures - the middle of your temperature gauge. Once you have reached the required position, keep your car engine running whilst parked but do not use the car for five minutes - please don’t leave your car unattended - it could get stolen! The cooling fan should automatically kick in - so listen out for it. You should hear it start up – don’t have your music on when doing this.

If the cooling fan fails to activate and your engine temperatures start to spiral upwards then you have a problem. If this happens switch your engine off and call your local independent garage. If you notice your temperature going up whilst out driving pull over as soon as it is safe to do so and switch your engine off. Do not attempt to check coolant and water levels until the engine has cooled down – the fluid that is there will be pressurised steam which will burn you if you attempt to remove caps. Get yourself towed to your local independent garage for further investigation before any further damage to the engine occurs. Happy Safe Motoring Folks!
