Top Tips To Drive Efficiently

The blog this week is about being as fuel efficient as possible when owning a Volvo or Toyota. With the current crisis in the Ukraine here in the UK we are seeing petrol and diesel prices skyrocket. Along with oil prices surging motorists are going to feel the pinch at the pumps. We have written many blogs on how you can make that tank of fuel last a little longer. Here is another blog to refresh your memories and help keep some pennies in your pocket. Changing how you drive and ensuring your Volvo or Toyota is as economical as possible will benefit you. Read on to find out more:
Based on current fuel prices, the average family car with a typical 55-litre tank will cost an extra £19 to fill with unleaded than it did a year ago, however this can literally change overnight and become even more expensive week by week!
- Make sure your car is in optimum health
We cannot stress the importance of regular servicing of your Volvo or Toyota or any vehicle you own for that matter. Using an independent garage as opposed to a dealer will automatically save you precious £££££’s – it’s a given fact! Good car maintenance ensures that your car is running efficiently resulting in better miles to the gallon.
- Check check check your tyre pressures
We have written so many blogs on the importance of checking your tyres and ensuring that they are correctly inflated. Not only does that mean your tyres will last longer (saving you ££££’s) it also ensures that your vehicle has better fuel consumption. Underinflated tyres are estimated to impact a car's fuel consumption by up to 10 per cent.
- Use the highest gear possible
By driving in the highest possible gear for your vehicle while keeping within the speed limit will help you achieve a high mpg. In urban settings change up through your gears as quickly as possible using the lowest revs.
- Be gentle on your accelerator
Take it easy on your accelerator pedal – less haste more gain – do not be so heavy footed on the accelerator – a smooth and gentle acceleration from standing positions will ensure that you are more fuel efficient. If you have an eco setting on your car then use it. Only use cruise control if you are on a motorway traveling at a constant speed on a flat surface.
- Think ahead and be aware
If you anticipate the road and traffic ahead you will be able to slow down in a smoother fashion and use your gears more effectively instead of stomping on your brakes. You will find you are using your fuel more efficiently and preserving your brakes better which will also save you money – a win win.
- Declutter your car
We have said this so many times in previous blogs – do you really need to cart the golf clubs around everywhere you go? Remove roof boxes and roof racks when you are not using them – they make your Volvo or Toyota less fuel efficient due to the drag effect.
- Avoid using your air-con and heater
You are better off dressing according to the weather rather than blasting out the heater or air con in your car. Using the air con or the heater in your car can increase fuel consumption by as much as 10% on shorter journeys – making little changes to the way you drive can add up to a good fuel saving over the course of the year. Of course, there is also the option to car share or walk on smaller journeys that you might be tempted to jump in the car for. Happy Safe Motoring Folks!
