your Volvo or Toyota to help reduce breakdowns and expensive car repair bills.
The blog this week is about the changes earlier on in the year with regards to using your mobile phone and satellite navigation systems whilst driving
your Volvo or Toyota or any car for that matter. We will explain what you can and cannot do and what the impliations will be if you break the law.
From the 1st of March 2017 the penalties changed. If you are now caught using your handheld mobile phone whilst driving you face a £200 fine
and six penalty points on your licence. This law also applies if you are sat in stationary traffic. Only use your mobile phone if you are parked with
the engine off, or before you start your journey or at the end. The ONLY exception to this is if you have to make a 999 call and you cannot pull over
and park the car safely. It is not against the law to use your satellite navigation or even to eat whilst you are driving, however if these actions
result in your standard of driving to decline you will be at risk of being prosecuted. Answering a call by pushing a button, changing your music or
entering an address into your sat nav whilst driving are against the law and you risk a fine and penalty points. If you are using your mobile phone
as a sat nav then it must be in a secure holder and not in full view of the driver, you must also not touch it whilst driving – so you must key in
your destination before you start your journey. Having a hands free kit is permitted however you are not allowed to press a button to make or receive
a call. If the police believe that your driving was impaired because you were using your hands free device then you could find yourself being fined
£100 and receiving 3 penalty points on your licence. If you are caught twice using your mobile phone you will have to go to court where you could find
yourself facing a 6 month ban and a hefty £1000 fine! Eating, smoking and drinking behind the wheel has no specific driving law – however if again
it is deemed that your driving was impaired you can be prosecuted. In conclusion we say do not take any risks to yourself or to other road users. Turn
your phone off whilst driving then you will not be tempted to be distracted. Set up your sat nav before you start your journey, and limit eating and
drinking behind the wheel. Keep safe out there folks and happy motoring!
