Why Has My Oil Warning Light Come On?

Oil warning light

The blog this week is about reasons why your oil warning light may ignite on your Volvo or Toyota dashboard. These lights are there to warn you of an issue or a potential issue – ignore them at your peril. We cannot stress the importance of preventative maintenance over reactive repairs. Ignoring warning lights can lead to very expensive and often avoidable repairs. Read on to find out more:

If you see the oil warning light appear on the dashboard of your Volvo or Toyota it is normally because the oil pressure is too low. Driving your Volvo
or Toyota whilst you have low oil pressure will eventually lead to the engine breaking basically. If this happens then you could be faced with a very hefty repair bill. For example – an engine rebuild, the purchase of a second hand engine or a new engine. All of these options come with an expensive bill. Therefore, the minute you see this light top up your oil or get your car to your local independent garage for further investigation. So, what could be the causes of low oil pressure?

  1. Low oil levels – you could have an oil leak, or your engine is burning too much oil
  2. The oil pump could have failed on your Volvo or Toyota
  3. You could have a blocked oil filter on your Volvo or Toyota

Either way if your Oil Warning light appears on the dashboard of your Volvo or Toyota then the first thing to do is check your oil levels and top it up if needs be. Check for patches of oil on the road/drive underneath where you normally park. Monitor the situation over the next few days – if the light comes back on then further investigation is required by your local independent Volvo or Toyota garage. Do not carry on driving your Volvo or Toyota with the warning light lit – there is a problem that if not actioned could lead to very serious and expensive complications. Can you afford to replace the engine or buy a new car? In our current economic climate, most of us would find it very difficult – seek professional help early to avoid being in that situation.
