The blog this week is about whether you will be able to get your MOT done in time. With the government extending MOT’s for 6 months over a period of 4 months that left 9 million car users taking advantage. Read on to find out more:
Are you a car user that has an MOT coming up over the next few months? In March 2020 the DVSA granted a 6 month MOT extension to cars that required an MOT from the 30th March 2020 – this continued until 31st July. During this period some 9 million cars did not have their MOT. However there were a lot of car owners that did take their vehicle in for MOT at their local independent garage (garages were allowed to remain open during lockdown as they were seen as an essential business). Of these 9 million vehicles 3 million have since been tested however that leaves a deficit of 6 million cars on our roads that have to be tested during the months of October through to January – along with all the vehicles that normally have an MOT fall during that time. We cannot stress strongly enough that by using any vehicle with defects on our roads, regardless of its MOT status, is an offence. You can be fined up to £2,500 – and be banned from driving and get up to 3 penalty points per defect for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition. A car that has not been in a garage for up to 18 months is bound to have some issues – some may well be dangerous! The amount of bald tyres and broken coil springs we have seen this year have been astronomical! We urge you to get your MOT booked in as quickly as possible – please do not leave it to the last minute and hope to get an MOT slot – you will probably find it very difficult. Even though on average an MOT takes 45 minutes to complete there will be repair work on a number of those vehicles that the garage has to carry out along with the regular servicing and repair work that the garage already deals with. Garages are going to find themselves dealing with those 6 million vehicles along with all the other regular servicing/repair and MOT work they normally have scheduled in – so if you really need your car our advice to you is to act quickly and get your MOT booked in – help your local independent garage plan ahead. Happy Safe Motoring Folks!
