Will My Cracked Windscreen Cause An MOT Failure?

The blog this week is about broken and cracked windscreens. Maybe a stone hit your windscreen and caused a chip that was left untreated which then turned into a crack or the current cold weather found some sort of fault in the windscreen. Or you poured hot water on your windscreen in an effort to defrost your screen. Either way it’s a problem that should not be left un-repaired. Read on to find out more:
A damaged windscreen does frequently constitute a MOT failure. Why? It is because it impairs your sight whilst driving. Any damage on your windscreen of more than 10 mm in Zone A ( a space of 290mm in front the steering wheel) or 40 mm in Zone B is likely to be deemed a serious or dangerous fault for your vehicle. If you get a stone chip, then the first thing you should do is get it seen to – your car insurance will usually cover you for this without it affecting your no claims bonus. There are companies that will come out to you at work or home and repair the chip. There are sometimes companies in the car park at your local supermarket offering this service whilst you shop – there are no excuses for not getting chips repaired quickly before they become expensive problems. Leaving chips runs the risk of it turning into a crack which cannot be repaired and requires the whole windscreen to be replaced – at your cost! If you are found driving with significant damage to your windscreen you run the risk of receiving a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points on your licence. If you have damage to your windscreen before taking your Volvo or Toyota in for its MOT get the chip repaired or if it’s a crack get the windscreen replaced. Happy Safe Motoring Folks!
