Windscreen Chips or Cracks – When Do You Need To Take Action

The blog this week is about the importance of looking after the health of your windscreen in your Volvo or Toyota. Read on to find out more:

The majority of us have probably experienced a chipped windscreen or even a cracked windscreen at some point in our car owning lives. They are an inevitable part of driving on the roads today. Debris can get thrown up from the vehicle in front of you or perhaps the vehicle in front of you is carrying items that may blow off onto your car whilst travelling down the road. Some chips and cracks however can lead to an MOT failure. Therefore it is best to get them dealt with in the first instance.  So what will constitute an MOT failure? If the crack or chip is in your line of vision and is more than 10mm (around the size of a 5p) across then these will most certainly result in an MOT failure. Your line of vision is centred in the middle of the steering wheel and typically spans 30cm wide. For the chip to be repaired it must be at least 3cm from the edge of the windscreen. If the damage is in other areas of the windscreen and is larger than 40mm (4cm), the vehicle can also fail its MOT. You can usually get chips repaired FOC or at a discount through your insurance company – check with them that this is available to you. There are companies that will come to your home or place of work to carry out the repairs and sometimes they can also be found in supermarket car parks. An innocent looking chip can often lead to a crack very quickly – these cannot be repaired and require a new windscreen! On average it costs around £30 to fix a chip and between £200-£450 to replace a windscreen. These prices vary according to the make and model of the vehicle. So please get your chips repaired when they happen – its much cheaper than leaving it to develop into cracks.

It is your responsibility to ensure that your Volvo or Toyota is roadworthy. If you are stopped by the police with visible cracks and chips you face the prospect of receiving a fine and the possibility of 3 points on your licence.  If you are unfortunate to crash your Volvo or Toyota because your vision was impaired due to a damaged windscreen then you face the very real possibility of being charged with driving without due care, and attention and potentially have your insurer refuse to pay your claim for the damage to your vehicle arising from your accident. It really is not worth taking these kinds of risks. Ignoring windscreen damage does not make it disappear.
