The blog this week is about giving you some fuel economy tips that will keep some much needed £ ’s in your pocket and help make that tank of fuel go a few miles extra! Have you ever heard the saying “Look after the pennies and the £’s look after themselves”? well its certainly true and over the course of the year these savings could certainly mount up! Read on to find out more:
There are plenty of changes you can make to your driving habits to help your Volvo or Toyota run more efficiently. Below are some tips to help you make the most out of that tank of fuel.
1. Drive less, walk more
It’s as basic as it sounds - if you can leave the car at home and walk then do so - it will help with your fitness and keep valuable £’s in your pocket. Plus consistent short journeys are not good for the modern diesel car - blocked DPF filters are very common and very expensive to rectify!
2. Keep your tyres inflated correctly
We talk about tyre health a lot and cant stress enough how much money you would save on fuel if your tyres were inflated correctly not to mention how much longer your tyres would last before needing to be replaced if you just looked after them - so a double saving to be had there! Astonishingly research carried out by a leading tyre manufacturer found that drivers are currently wasting almost £1 billion a year on excess fuel by driving with under-inflated tyres. If in any doubt as to the correct tyre pressure either check your owners manual or pop into your local independent garage, such as ACC UK Ltd, Volvo & Toyota Independent Specialists of Farnborough, Hampshire who offer free tyre and battery checks.
3. Remove clutter
We have written about removing clutter in your Volvo or Toyota to improve fuel efficiency many times - do you really need to drive everywhere with your golf clubs in the boot or the roof box on the roof? Get rid of them until you need to use them - the lighter the car the less fuel is used!
4. Adhere to the speed limits
The faster you drive, the greater the fuel consumption. A leading breakdown organisation recently carried out research which showed that driving at 70mph uses up to 9% more fuel than at 60mph and up to 15% more than at 50mph, whilst whizzing around at 80mph can use up to 25% more fuel than at 70mph. We thought they were quite staggering stats - less haste folks!
5. Reduce the air-con usage
Air-conditioning can increase your vehicles' fuel consumption at low speeds, but at higher speeds the effects are less noticeable. Open the windows when it’s hot outside and save the air conditioning for motorway driving. Please ensure you use a qualified and authorised garage to re-gas your aircon - there are rules and regulations that require garages and motor vehicle technicians to be qualified to carry out this procedure - so ensure your local independent garage is legally able to carry this out - (Be wary of cheap offers - often too good to be true)- ACC UK Ltd of Farnborough are fully qualified and certified!
Take care of your car by making sure it’s well-maintained and serviced regularly according to the manufacturers service schedule. Don’t ignore dashboard warning lights by sticking your head in the sand - these issues do not normally go away they just get worse and could be more costly in the long run. Shop around your local independent garages to get competitive quotes. A well maintained and regularly serviced car will attract a better resale value when it comes time for you to sell or upgrade. Happy Safe Motoring Folks!
