If you are not going to use your car for more than a month or so, it is best to store it properly in order to prevent unnecessary damage and possible repairs upon your return.

  • Fill the petrol tank to help prevent condensation from accumulating in the fuel tank. Add a fuel stabiliser and drive the car around for a while to help distribute the additive to all the engine parts.
  • Wash and wax the car thoroughly prior to storage to protect the paint finish, especially important with salt and grit from the roads.
  • Place a vapor barrier on your garage floor. A 4-mil polyethylene drop cloth will do.
  • Disengage the parking brake to help avoid possible brake corrosion.
  • Put the car on jack stands if you have them to help take the weight of the vehicle off the wheels and tyres.
  • Disconnect and remove the battery to keep it from draining. Place the battery on a trickletype charger. Or periodically drain the battery, using a small light bulb, and then recharge it with a low-volt charger.
  • Plug the exhaust pipe with a rag to prevent moist air from getting into it.

Doing these things should help to ensure that your car will start upon your return and you will not require the services of your local independent repair garage! Happy Motoring!
